What Do Writers Need?

We have all read articles about writers and their requirements.

Some of these articles sound mystical, others make the job so complicated it is only suitable for professors and others are simply trite.

Of course the type of writing is a big factor. There is fiction, non-fiction, research, commercial, advertising, poetry, etc. All writing is thought sharing however this is meant is the literal sense of the words. A good example of this is the social media websites like Twitter.

Anyone can write, even dumb-ass jerks that seem to have no value to society at large. Some of their thoughts can be a reality check for the rest of us. I am pointing this out as we should respect everyone, regardless of credentials. The mind is an amazing apparatus which resonates in ways quite different, depending on the influences of background, culture, upbringing and so on.  It allows us to expand our thought processes without actually having to experience the event. This could be considered a jump start on situations.

There are a myriad of reasons why people write.

There is a burning in their gut which makes them write. These are actually artists with their outlet expressed by writing. Some of us acquire a writing ability through education while yet others find themselves in this field through circumstance. It doesn’t matter which group you fit into, there are basics to writing and once mastered allow you to fullfill the wish of becoming a writer in your own right.

Some writers find the writing field lonely, while others consider unsolicited company irritating. Some of them create great, elaborate time management plans which allow them to function in whichever capacity their life style dictates at definite allotted times and places, while others seem to just go with the flow.

Your personality will decide how you go about writing.

Don’t worry about it. Whether or not your family appreciates how you handle writing is quite another thing and usually some sort of compromise is required. So compromise.

Writer's block stops many people before they get started.

If you are taking assignments, you are told what to write about. Do your research and you must research, even if you know your subject. If nothing else research gets your literary juices flowing and your thoughts seem to form.

If you are freelancing then you may need outside stimulus. Go to events, talk to people, smell the roses, watch your family and friends and above all listen to what is happening. Watch television, especially the commercials. Analyze each commercial. What is the bottom line they use to sell their product or service? Now write an article on that bottom line. Send a “thank you” note to the Company that created the commercial as they have given you free access to some very gifted writers and thoughts.

So get busy - huh?

The only way you will ever know if you are a writer or not is simply roll up your sleeves, pick your subject and write. Then put your work away for a week then go over it again. You will quickly see the rough edges. Revise your work. Put a draft into Microsoft Word or comparable program for spell check and grammar. Then put it away again for another week. When you can flow through your work and nothing else comes to mind - publish it. There are places for self-publishing, free publishing and paid for publishing. Send us a copy too to keep us in the loop.

Writing is not necessarily easy, nor is it necessarily hard. It is what you want to do with it and adapting the labor of it to you own circumstance as we are all writers on our life paths.
