How To Love Your Clothes Closet

Do you go through an emotional strain every time you have to use your clothes closet?

Are the contents jammed in so tight even your children do not use it for hide-and-seek anymore? Why is the clothes closet in that kind of shape?

Relax. We have all been there.

The average home master bedroom clothes closet is built with one top shelf and one rod running from wall to wall. That is it. Now you are supposed to fit in your home and office clothes for both you and your husband. Good Luck. You might have a walk-in closet which initially is easier to get along with but ultimately ends up the same as the previous one described.

The basic steps to organizing a clothes closet:

Review each garment. Is it still being worn? Go to the 3 pile system - keep, discard, and donate.

We are inclined to hold on to clothes that we no longer wear as they represent a special time in our life, or they cost a lot of money and we haven’t achieved what we consider completed value (that means we haven’t worn them much).

Your husband may only wear a suit on very special occasions but he still needs his suit.

These clothes do not belong in your regular clothes closet. You should either find another closet they can fit into or make a space in the basement or garage (if it is heated) for a Special Clothes area.

What is on the top shelf? Go through each box, bag and container. Again, apply the 3 pile system.

Are there items that were being stored in your closet that would be more appropriate in another place where it would be more useful? Make a pile for these items that can be stored elsewhere in your home.

If you store your shoes in the same closet then you will also have to review these as well.

Your closet should now be empty.

Put the clothes you are going to keep back in the closet. Is it still over-stocked?

If it is, (lucky you) it is time to visit a store that offers closet organizers or go online.

Actually, if you go online and visit Rubbermaid (.com) click on Closets and Shelving – click on any heading for more information, it will open a new window. Look to the right-hand side about half way down the page where they feature a Closet Design Tool. Click on the image and a new window will open. Give it a couple of moments to load and then follow the directions. You will see many options and ideas to think about.

You should measure your clothes closet before you start using their Design Tool as it will be asking you specific questions. If you go through all the steps you will be given various options and designs to work with. It is a real experience if you are not familiar with this type of organizing.

Now whether you just had to clean out your clothes closet or have to shop to accomplish your objective you are going to become best friend’s with an area which previously troubled you.

Now that you can love your closet, let’s think about where else your home needs attention.
